Personal Interview {Tips,Questions and Answers}

The Interview may be the most difficult part of any selection procedure or the most easy. After clearing the technical barriers its time to face an exam where you cannot revise your answers or leave them for later -- the interview. Here are some tips and tricks to help you perform your best in any interview; whether it's for college, a job or qualification.

1. Be confident: the key of a successful interview is confidence. If you believe that you are the right person for the job/course and are confident then it's likely that your interviewer will believe that too.

2. To improve your confidence talk more, you can practice by facing the mirror and talking. Talk about yourself, your dreams and your strengths. Focus on speaking fluently without stumbling or fidgeting.

3. It's essential that whichever language you speak in, you should have a good command over the language. Brush up some basic grammar rules.

4. Listen to news in the language you will be using during the exam. This will help you remember correct pronunciations and improve your flow of language.

5. Remember that while it's good to talk eloquently you should not ramble on. Speak clearly and concisely, so you express your thoughts in the best way possible.

6. Know your resume inside out: you should know everything about your resume as anything may be asked, your previous education, extra-curricular activities, awards, projects etc. You should be able to confidently speak about each point on your resume.

7. Remember to maintain eye contact with the interviewer.

8. Research the organization before your interview and prepare at least 2-3 questions that you will ask the interviewer about the job/course/organization. This shows your genuine interest in the role.

9. Practice positive body language. Even if the interviewer hasn't actively studied body language he/she will still pick up general signs. Remember not to fidget, stand still and relaxed and while sitting sit casually.

10. Try planning your answers to a few questions that you know will definitely come, such as: Why are you interested in this course/job/field? What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? Why do you think you should be selected for this role/course? Do not write out any answers but jot down a few important points that you need to remember for the answers and based on the points speak impromptu.

11. Before the interview practice with a friend/relative and record your answers. You will be able to listen/see where you fumble and where you need to improve.

12. Focus on speaking positively and avoiding negativity. This gives a more positive effect of your interview and will more likely get you a positive response.

13. Be professional while you speak, avoid petty conversations, complaining, blaming or trying to seek pity.

14. Be polite and calm. Showing anger is definitely not a good idea.

15. Include your technical knowledge wherever applicable, this shows you are proactive and pay attention to studies.

16. On the day of the interview make sure you are properly dressed in formal attire, are carrying copies of your resume (and relevant certificates as required) in proper case, are well rested and fresh.

17. Remember to reach the venue early and arrive for the interview on time.

There is no syllabus on interview preparation and no notes. You won't be given answer sheets or time to revise. What you will have however is a clean slate to express yourself. Your power lies in your ability of expression: how you talk, move, respond, dress, carry yourself and how you answer questions. Be calm, cool and confident and you will definitely get good marks! All the Best!

POST GATE INFORMATION

GATE Score Card

According to the latest info from IIT Kharagpur, the marks of candidates appearing in EC, CS, EE, ME and CE will be normalized across the multiple sessions.  This means that whether the paper in a particular session is easy or tough will not matter in the overall scheme of things.
Based on the above, and considering various normalization methods, the committee arrived at the following formula for calculating the normalized marks, for CE, CS, EC, EE and ME papers.

Calculation of GATE Score for all papers

GATE PAPER PATTERN

The GATE examination consists of a single paper of 3 hours duration which contains 65 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks.
GATE 2014 would contain questions of two different types in various papers:
(i) Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) carrying 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections. These questions are objective in nature, and each will have a choice of four answers, out of which the candidate has to mark the correct answer(s).
(ii) Numerical Answer Questions of 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections. For these questions the answer is a real number, to be entered by the candidate using the virtual keypad. No choices will be shown for this type of questions.
The examination for all the papers will be carried out in an ONLINE Computer Based Test (CBT) mode where the candidates will be shown the questions in a random sequence on a computer screen. The candidates are required to either select the answer (for MCQ type) or enter the answer for numerical answer type question using a mouse on a virtual keyboard (keyboard of the computer will be disabled). Candidates will be provided with blank paper sheets for rough work and these have to be returned back after the examination. At the end of the 3-hour window, the computer will automatically close the screen from further actions.
General Aptitude Questions
All the papers will contain few questions that test the General Aptitude (Language and Analytical Skills), apart from the core subject of the paper.
XE Paper
A candidate appearing in the XE paper has to answer the following
Section A – Engineering Mathematics (compulsory)
  1. GA – General Aptitude (compulsory)
  2. Any two of XE sections B to G
The choice of two sections from B to G can be made during the examination after viewing the questions. Only two optional sections can be answered at a time. A candidate wishing to change midway of the examination to another optional section must first choose to deselect one of the previously chosen optional sections (B to G).
XL Paper
A candidate appearing in the XL paper has to answer the following
  1. Section H – Chemistry (compulsory)
  2. GA – General Aptitude (compulsory)
  3. Any two of XL sections I to M
The choice of two sections from I to M can be made during the examination after viewing the questions. Only two optional sections can be answered by the candidate. A candidate wishing to change midway of the examination to another optional section must first choose to deselect one of the previously chosen optional sections (I to M).
